Brain-Compatible Dance Education by Anne Green Gilbert
This all-encompassing text will tell you everything you need to know about teaching brain-based, engaging, and foolproof dance classes to infants through adults. It is a great companion to Anne's popular book, Creative Dance For All Ages. The Overview chapter reviews brain research and then describes how to effectively present holistic dance lessons, using a 5-part lesson plan, to engage learners and to think as well as to move. The five main chapters include complete information on the BrainDance; new conceptual explorations and improvisations; many movement combinations for all ages, circle dances and folk dances; choreographic springboards and tools; cooling down, reflection, and assessment ideas. Explorations and combinations described connect with music suggestions from Eric Chappelle's Music for Creative Dance 4 CD series. Appendices include Assessment Rubrics, Brain Development, Patterns of Coordination, Motif Notation, Resources, and more! Published by the National Dance Association/AAHPERD in 2006, 360 pp.

Brain-Compatible Dance Education is a must have resource for any dance educator. The organization of the book follows Anne's five-part lesson plan that is a lesson plan that every student can find a piece of to enjoy. The strategies and games that Anne has developed and collected over the years are truly enjoyed by all students. Another aspect of the book that is incredibly helpful to public school dance educators is the alignment Anne has done to the National Dance Education Standards. This helps build support for the work that we do with our students. Finally there are wonderful resources at the end of the book that are helpful not only to educators but are great resources to give out to parents. For these reasons and many more, I recommend Brain-Compatible Dance Education as a necessary addition to anyone's professional library who teaches dance, publicly or privately. ~ Martha Daman, Performing Arts, Language Arts and Social Studies teacher, Renaissance Junior High School, WA

For the past two terms, I have been working on integrating the Brain-Compatible Dance Education methods in modern, jazz, and African college dance classes. The results have been really inspiring and the students and I are learning more than I ever imagined. I am consistently struck by how complete the work is. Your approach really speaks to the dancer as a whole person and preps us for the variety of roles we play. So long story short, thank you – a lot. ~ A.T. Moffett, Dance Educator, Eugene, Oregon

BrainDance by Anne Green Gilbert
In this 85 minute DVD Anne Green Gilbert and her students (toddlers through seniors) demonstrate eight variations of the BrainDance, an exercise that moves through eight fundamental movement patterns that wire the central nervous system in the first year of life. The BrainDance offers benefits such as improved mood, reduced stress, increased alertness and concentration. It can be used at home, at school, or in the office, as well as in the dance studio. Use the BrainDance for brain reorganization, body connectivity/alignment, a centering body/brain warm-up or to wake-up or calm-down. Variations include rhymes with young children, standing, lying down, sitting in chairs, traveling, with partners, and integration with dance concepts. Includes written insert with detailed information about brain development and the rationale behind the BrainDance. Produced by Anne Green Gilbert in 2003, 85 minutes.

“I am a great fan of your BrainDance and use it in the dance classes I teach. The results have been amazing, and I am excited to see how this method continues to help my little dancers as they progress through our program." ~ Heather Overbeck, Director, Principle Dance Studio, Riverside, IL

“Wow, I am really inspired. I love the video! The BrainDance model has worked wonderfully in every setting and with every age group. It's a great framework for teachers with it's endless possibilities, and it is wonderful for children. It helps individual children focus, and I've noticed that it brings the group together so that the class can really 'take off'." ~ Erica Rosenberg, Teaching Artist, New York
